Imizamo Yethu

My friend Evans (a Zimbabwean refugee) took me for a walk through the township of Imizamo in Hout Bay Cape Town. It was a Sunday, and all the ladies busied themselves with the washing and cleaning and doing their hair, while the men gathered in the tiny alleys between their shacks to enjoy a beer and a smoke and catch up on the weekly happenings. As I walked through, I was inspired by all the beautiful colours of the shacks and the people, but also appalled by the conditions that these refugees live in, while the government spends millions on beautifying the city for the world cup visitors. Something not right there....
